Tasmanian Oak / Victorian Ash

Tasmanian Oak and Victorian Ash are generic industry terms - often used interchangebly - for three related species of native Eucalyptus. Also known as Messmate, Alpine Ash or Mountain Ash. There can be slight variations in colour and grain characteristics depending on the location of origin.
Botanical Name: Euc. delegatensis (Alpine Ash), Euc. obliqua (Messmate), Euc. regnans (Mountain Ash).
Appearance: Heartwood pale to light brown in colour with a pinkish tinge. Sapwood generally pale yellow. Texture varies from moderately to rather coarse but even. Grain generally straight, sometimes interlocked. Growth rings generally visible and varying in prominence. Gum veins are common.
Common Uses: Interior construction applications including furniture, musical instruments, flooring, panelling, skirtings & architraves. Not durable for exterior applications.
Finishing: Generally stained, oiled or clear-finished to highlight the natural colour and grain pattern.
