Pine: Cypress

Generally supplied from Northern or White Cypress, however others of the 13 native species may also be available.
Botanical Name: Callitris species.
Appearance: Northern Cypress: Heartwood is pale yellow to streaky gold and brown while the sapwood is whitish pale yellow. Grain generally fine and even, occasionally interlocked, producing an attractive pattern and knots are common.
White Cypress: Heartwood varies from light to dark yellow-brown with creamy white sapwood. Grain is very fine with an even texture and generally straight and knots are common
Common Uses: Cypress is generally lighter than other pines, being frequently used for exterior framing and construction timbers. Its softer nature also makes it well-suited for furniture construction and the timber contains a high concentration of aromatic compounds which emits a pleasant fragrance. While this increases its fire volatility, it acts as a natural deterrent to termites, providing resistance against infestation.
Finishing: Generally a film-forming surface finish such as paint or clear finish is preferable, as the high concentration of aromatic compounds does not readily accept penetrating finishes such as stains or oils.
